Your Fiber Carrier Was Acquired 10 Things Enterprise Customers Should Audit Before Renewal

Enterprise Fiber Renewal Audit
A carrier acquisition can improve your network and still make renewal the wrong time to assume nothing changed

The strongest acquisitions create more on-net reach, more routes and more scale. They can also create duplicate systems, overlapping products, new billing structures and different support paths. Before renewing, verify the network you have now rather than the network you originally bought.

The renewal question
If your carrier now owns more fiber than it did when you signed, are you still paying for the old architecture?
The 2026 fiber market makes this especially timely

Zayo completed its acquisition of Crown Castle’s Fiber Solutions business in May, adding roughly 90,000 route miles and more than 40,000 on-net enterprise locations. Uniti’s combination with Windstream likewise created a much larger national fiber platform, while other operators continue reshaping portfolios around enterprise, AI and wholesale fiber.

That can be good news for customers

An acquired route that used to be third-party access may become native network. A formerly weak metro may gain new paths. A renewal can therefore be an opportunity to improve architecture, not merely renegotiate price.

The fast renewal audit
Audit Area Question Renewal Opportunity
RouteIs the circuit now on-net?Lower cost or better diversity
SLAWhich SLA applies after renewal?Stronger availability or restoration terms
NOCWho owns escalation now?Faster support path
PricingDoes old off-net pricing still make sense?Re-rate service
Cross-connectWho bills and disconnects it?Eliminate duplicate charges
10 things to audit before signing the renewal
01 // NETWORK OWNERSHIP
Find out whether your circuit became on-net

An acquisition can convert a circuit that previously depended on another carrier’s local loop into service that runs entirely across the new owner’s network.

That can change cost, repair ownership, provisioning complexity and route options. Ask for the current on-net or off-net status at every site.

02 // PHYSICAL ROUTE
Ask whether the new footprint creates a better path

A larger combined network may create alternate metro routes, new building entrances, shorter paths or genuine geographic diversity that did not exist when the original contract was signed.

03 // SLA
Do not assume the old SLA survives unchanged

Availability, latency, packet-loss, jitter, repair and installation commitments can vary by product and service family.

Renewal should identify the exact current SLA document and the specific service tier to which your circuit belongs.

04 // SERVICE CREDITS
Check the claim process before the next outage

Some enterprise SLAs require the customer to request credits within a defined window rather than issuing them automatically.

Record the claim deadline, eligible outage types, credit cap and which carrier records control the calculation.

05 // NOC
Test the escalation path before renewal

Confirm the current NOC number, portal, escalation levels, severe-outage process, after-hours contacts and whether the legacy support team is still authoritative. A merger can leave several support paths functioning simultaneously during integration.

06 // PRICING
Reprice the circuit against the combined network

Do not simply negotiate five percent off the old bill. The old rate may have included a third-party access charge, scarce metro capacity or construction economics that no longer apply.

Ask for current pricing at the same speed and at the next two bandwidth tiers.

07 // CROSS-CONNECTS
Audit every third-party cross-connect and meet-me-room charge

Data-center and carrier-hotel circuits can carry separate monthly cross-connect charges outside the carrier invoice.

If the acquisition changes the network path or port, confirm whether the old cross-connect is still required and who is responsible for ordering its disconnect.

08 // UNDERLYING CARRIER
Identify every third-party dependency that remains

A combined network may still use another provider for a building extension, local access circuit, international segment or remote branch. Map those dependencies site by site rather than assuming acquisition equals complete network ownership.

09 // PRODUCT MIGRATION
Ask whether the legacy product is staying or being groomed

Network integration can eventually involve re-provisioning access circuits, moving ports, changing customer premises equipment or migrating customers onto a current product family.

Renewal is the time to ask whether any planned grooming could create maintenance windows or require customer action.

10 // CONTRACT CONTROL
Do not let an acquisition quietly reset the commercial clock

Review renewal term, auto-renewal, rate escalators, bandwidth upgrades, relocation rights, early termination charges, construction obligations and assignment language.

A stronger combined network may justify staying. It does not automatically justify accepting another five-year term on the old structure.

Service credits are easy to lose through paperwork

Enterprise SLAs frequently cap credits and require the customer to submit a claim within a defined period. Renewal documentation should identify that process explicitly.

Treat the credit process like an accounts-receivable workflow: owner, deadline, ticket number, outage duration, affected circuit and claim status.

The acquisition can create five negotiation levers
01   Move off-net sites onto native fiber
02   Add real route diversity using acquired infrastructure
03   Reprice bandwidth on lower-cost owned facilities
04   Consolidate contracts and support escalation
05   Remove stale cross-connects and third-party access charges
